General Practice Nursing – Your Path to a Meaningful and Responsible Career in Healthcare. If helping people is important to you, you are interested in health and patient care, and you want to acquire a meaningful and highly demanded profession, the General Practice Nursing study programme could be your choice. The programme is delivered by the Faculty of Medicine. Upon completion of the studies, you will be awarded a Professional Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and the qualification of a General Practice Nurse.

Why choose this programme?

Studies oriented towards modern nursing practice. The study programme is based on J. Bruner’s spiral curriculum concept and the five-step evidence-based practice teaching model. Throughout the studies, topics are systematically revisited and deepened, ensuring gradual and consistent development of knowledge and practical skills. The programme is delivered using a modular cyclical study system.

Simulation-based learning and real clinical situations. The study process includes simulation-based learning in the Nursing Simulation Training Centre, using real clinical situations and standardized procedural protocols. Examinations and interim assessments are organised using objective structured clinical situations and the ESCAPE method.

Practical experience in a real healthcare environment. During the studies, professional placements are carried out in various healthcare institutions in Utena, Vilnius, Kaunas, Rokiškis, Anykščiai, and other cities. These placements provide real work experience and prepare students for professional practice.

International opportunities. Students have the opportunity to study and undertake placements in Portugal, Germany, Latvia, Italy, Greece, Norway, Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and other countries.

Career opportunities. After graduation, you will be able to work in various healthcare institutions and provide nursing care services to patients of different age groups. General practice nurses are involved in health education, health promotion and maintenance, disease and risk factor prevention, and the physical, psychological, and social care of patients. During your studies, you will acquire competencies to make professional decisions, work effectively in teams, apply evidence-based practice, and ensure high-quality patient care.

Further studies. After completing the Professional Bachelor’s degree programme in General Practice Nursing, you may continue your studies in university-level nursing, midwifery, or other health sciences study programmes in Lithuania and abroad.

The aim of the study programme is to prepare nurses who are able to organise and implement patient care and education in an innovative and high-quality manner, to assess the effectiveness of nursing care, to protect and care for patients' health, to collaborate with other institutions, pharmaceutical and healthcare professionals, to take part in applied nursing research and to develop the practice of nursing.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge and its application. The graduate has the ability (knowledge of):

1.1 Be able to apply the legislation governing health care in the implementation of nursing care.
1.2 Be able to relate knowledge of the person's health status and physical and social environment to the planning, implementation and evaluation of care and/or nursing interventions.
1.3 Apply knowledge of education, psychology and nursing sciences in planning personal and/or community health education.

Research skills. The graduate has the skills:

2.1 Be able to collect data from applied research in nursing science and summarise the results.
2.2 Be able to apply research findings to specific nursing and innovation problems.

Special abilities. The graduate has the ability:

3.1 Be able to identify the nursing needs of the patient and/or the community and to plan and organise nursing care.
3.2 Be able to carry out nursing interventions and evaluate nursing outcomes.
3.3 Be able to involve individuals, families and groups in the management of health problems.
3.4 Identify the impact of lifestyle and environmental risk factors on nursing care to encourage individuals, families and groups to lead healthy lives and take care of their health.
3.5 Be able to initiate crisis and disaster relief, and independently initiate and implement non-emergency life-saving measures in crisis and disaster situations.

Social abilities. The graduate has the ability:

4.1 Be able to communicate and collaborate effectively within the healthcare team in the implementation of the nursing process, including participation in practical training of healthcare workers.
4.2 Be able to communicate orally and in writing with healthcare and other sectoral stakeholders in a professional ethical and civil manner.
4.3 Demonstrate tolerance of diversity of beliefs and intercultural differences.

Personal abilities. The graduate has the ability:

5.1 Be able to select learning strategies and methods for personal development in professional practice, guided by science-based knowledge of the nursing profession.
5.2 Demonstrate social responsibility in the nursing process, developing an image of the nursing profession based on ethical values.
5.3. Be able to independently assure and evaluate the quality of nursing care, and analyse the quality of nursing care in order to improve their professional practice as a general nurse.

The study programme focuses on the acquisition of qualifications based on the provided competences in Article 31 (7) of Directive 2013/55 / EU:

  1. To independently diagnose the nursing care required using current theoretical and clinical knowledge and to plan, organise and implement nursing care when treating patients on the basis of the knowledge and skills. 
  2. To work together effectively with other actors in the health sector, including participation in the practical training of health personnel on the basis of the knowledge and skills .
  3. To empower individuals, families and groups towards healthy lifestyles and self-care on the basis of the knowledge and skills.
  4. To independently initiate lifepreserving immediate measures and to carry out measures in crises and disaster situations.
  5. To independently give advice to, instruct and support persons needing care and their attachment figures.
  6. To independently assure the quality of, and to evaluate, nursing care.
  7. To comprehensively communicate professionally and to cooperate with members of other professions in the health sector.
  8. To analyse the care quality to improve his own professional practice as a nurse responsible for general care.

The study programme aims to achieve the following competences of the EBP:

  1. To formulate and ask questions to improve the quality of care.
  2. To describe practice problems using internal evidence.
  3. To formulate questions based on PICOT format.
  4. To search for external evidence in answering questions.
  5. Critically to evaluate internal evidence.
  6. Critically to appraise published research to analyse its reliability and applicability to nursing practice.
  7. To conduct case studies of individual practice cases, critically evaluating the application of evidence.
  8. Systematically to collect data from practice as internal evidence for decision making in nursing care of individuals, groups and populations.
  9. To integrate evidence gathered from external and internal sources to plan changes in evidence-based care.
  10. To implement changes in practice based on evidence, experience and patient values to improve the quality of care.
  11. To evaluate the outcomes of evidence-based decisions and practice changes in the care of individuals, groups of individuals and populations, identifying the most appropriate care for each case.
  12. To ensure the dissemination of evidence-based care to improve quality of care.
  13. To participate in strategies to maintain a culture of evidence-based care.
